Hallstatt: A touch of magic right on our doorstep
Looking out of the windows of the Seerose Obertraun, you are greeted by the mirror-like surface of Lake Hallstatt and the majestic peaks of the Dachstein. Although Obertraun is an oasis of peace and undisturbed relaxation, it is one of the world’s most famous and most photographed small towns, Hallstatt is just a stone’s throw away from us.
Whether you’re setting off on a romantic boat trip, a pleasant cycle ride along the lake shore, or travelling by car or train, Hallstatt’s fairytale scenery is just a few minutes’ journey from our hotel.
Why is a visit to Hallstatt a must?
The sight of the 16th-century Alpine houses, wedged between the cliff face and the lake and perched one on top of the other, is breathtaking in itself. Hallstatt, however, is not only beautiful but also a World Heritage Site, and is full of secrets waiting to be discovered.
Top attractions for guests at the Seerose:
-
The world’s oldest salt mine (Salzwelten): Travel back 7,000 years in time! You can take a cable car up into the heart of the mountain, where an underground salt lake, miners’ slides and a stunning multimedia show await you.
-
Skywalk viewing platform: From the platform located at the salt mine, which juts out 35 metres from the rock face, there is a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the lake, Hallstatt and, right in front of us, our beautiful Obertraun shore.
-
The famous photo spot (Postkartenblick): Take a stroll northwards from the town centre and take your own postcard-perfect photo of the Lutheran church tower rising above the lake.
-
The Ossuary (Beinhaus): The small ossuary next to St Michael’s Chapel is one of the most extraordinary places in the world. Exhumed from the cemetery due to a lack of space, these artistically painted skulls, decorated with names and floral patterns, represent a unique cultural heritage.
Interesting facts about Hallstatt that you may not have known
Chinese translation: Hallstatt has so captivated the world that an almost exact, complete replica of the village has been built in Guangdong Province, China – but the genuine, unadulterated Alpine air and the coolness of the lake can only be experienced here, in the Salzkammergut region.
On foot or by water: Right up until the end of the 19th century, Hallstatt could only be reached by boat or via steep, narrow paths. Even the first road could only be carved out of the rock along the lakeshore by means of blasting.
A tip for guests at the Seerose Obertraun: Here’s how to visit Hallstatt!
As Hallstatt is extremely popular all over the world, the pedestrianised streets are packed with tourists during the day. Our guests, however, have a huge advantage!
As the Seerose is just next door, we recommend that arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Once the coachloads of tourists have left, Hallstatt regains its quiet, mystical atmosphere. The light of the setting sun on the lake and the lamps coming on in the old houses create such an intimate and magical experience that only those living in the area can truly enjoy.
After a day full of adventures, return to Obertraun and unwind after your walk in the comfort of the Seerose, right on the lakeshore!
